Frequently Asked Questions

Note: This is our North Dakota version. You may also be interested in the Frequently Asked Questions for our regular online course.

Getting an error message about your internet ID, or password, or self-enrollment key? Follow these instructions.

The following are technical questions about our North Dakota online course. You may also be interested in Frequently Asked Questions by Parents.

How much does this course cost?

This course is $69. No discounted rates are available at this time.

How do I register for the course?

Registration is easy! See step-by-step instructions here.

How long will I have access to the course?

Once you register, you will have access to the course for 60 days. You should receive a reminder a couple of weeks before your access is set to expire.

Do I need to complete the course all at once?

You can go in and out of the course as often as you like. Since this is an online course, it can be completed at your own pace. Be sure to keep record of the Internet ID and password you set when you register. Also, it may be helpful to save the course link in your internet favorites so you can easily access it again in the future.

How much time can I expect to spend on this course?

The time spent on the course will vary by individual. Plan on spending at least 4.5 hours in the course.

I am getting a divorce/separation through the Minnesota court system. Will this course meet the Minnesota court requirements?

No, this court will not meet Minnesota requirements. The Minnesota Supreme Court requires at least 8 hours of education and coverage of the 25 minimum standards to meet divorce education requirements. This course does not meet either requirements. The Parents Forever™ Online Course for Parents, rather than this North Dakota version, is better suited for parents working through the Minnesota court system.

Can I receive documentation for the time spent in the course?

Yes! After you completing each module, you will be asked to complete an online feedback form and quiz. After successfully completing all feedback forms and quizzes, you will be directed to a webpage to print off your certificate of participation.

Help! I’ve never participated in an online course before.

Moodle, the courseware used for this course, is easy to use. Once you get into the course, everything should be self explanatory. If you want more information on Moodle, watch an online orientation or see the online user guide information that is available. These links will always be available from within the course, in the left navigation bar.

That being said, it should be noted that online courses are not for everyone. You need a reliable computer, specific software, and internet access. It also helps if you are generally comfortable with computers and being online. To help weigh whether the online or in-person version is better for you, see Which Class is for Me: Online or In-Person?

Also, be assured that help will always be available once you register for the course. If you are having Moodle issues, you can send an email to moodle@umn.edu.

Help! I’m having problems registering for the course.

If you are having difficulty registering for the course, first double check that you are using Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer web browsers to register. (People commonly experience “stuck” screens when they use other web browsers, like Google Chrome.)

If you are having difficulties with a specific screen, make sure that you are answering all “required” questions.

If you are not sure what to answer for specific questions, the screen captures (627 K PDF) of each registration system page may help you. Remember, if you do not already have an x500 email account, you will need to "create a new guest account". Do NOT create a “sponsored guest account” you do not need a sponsor for this course.

If none of the above steps help you, contact College of Continuing Education IT at cceinfo@umn.edu or 612-624-4000. Tell them you are trying to get into the Parents Forever™ Online Course for Parents and give them the details about the problem(s) you are experiencing.

If you’ve tried all the above steps and are not getting anywhere with the College of Continuing Education IT, please let us know and we will try to assist you.

Help! I’ve registered for the course but I can’t remember how to get into (or back into) the course.

Click on the direct course link to access the course. You may wish to save it in your internet browser favorites. Alternatively, you can always go to your MyU page, log in with your Internet ID/password, and click on your “my COURSES” tab. This course, in addition to any other UMN online course you have signed up for, will be listed on this web page. (Please note, there may be up to a 12 hour delay from when you register and when the course appears on your MyU course page. You should be able to access the online course immediately however by clicking the direct course link.)

Q: Help! I’ve registered for the course but when I try to log in I keep getting an error message about my Internet ID and/or password, or it asks for a self-enrollment key.

Double check that you are using the right Internet ID and/or password. See the next question if you can’t remember your Internet ID and/or password.
If you are confident that it is correct and your error message talks about your password “not being strong enough” proceed with trying to enter it anyway. If you’ve entered it and it seems to stop you from proceeding, call UMN Technology Help Services at 612-301-4357.

If you’ve tried the above step and are not getting anywhere, please let us know and we will try to assist you. Contact us for additional assistance as needed.

Help! I’ve registered for the course but I can’t remember my Internet ID and/or password.

If you have an x500 Internet ID, given to University staff and students, you would have used this Internet ID for your course. If you do have an x500 Internet ID, you would have used your complete email address (including the @XXX) as your Internet ID.

To retrieve your password, call UMN Technology Help Services at 612-301-4357.

If you’ve tried the above step and are not getting anywhere, please let us know and we will try to assist you. Contact Parents Forever™ for additional assistance as needed.

Help! I’ve registered for the course but it’s not showing up on my MyU courses page.

Once you register, the course should appear on your my courses page within 12 hours. Go to your MyU page, log in with your Internet ID/password, and click on your “my COURSES” tab. This course, in addition to any other UMN online course you have signed up for, will be listed on this web page.

If it is not showing up after 12 hours, this most likely means that when you registered you set up a “sponsored guest account” vs. a regular guest account. You should still be able to access the course by going to the direct course link. Save it to your internet favorites so you can find it easily.

You can also try contacting College of Continuing Education IT at cceinfo@umn.edu or 612-624-4000 and tell them that you suspect you have signed up for a sponsored guest account vs. a regular guest account.
