Use Your EBT Card at Farmers Markets!
It’s simple to bring home fresh vegetables, fruits and other locally produced foods for you and your family:
- More and more Minnesota farmers markets accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits when you shop with your Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.
- Make your money go further when you shop at farmers markets with your EBT card. For each dollar you spend, you can also receive Market Bucks — up to an equivalent of five dollars per day — to spend during the same trip or anytime during the 2013 market season.
The Market Bucks incentive is funded by the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, as part of Blue Cross’ long-term commitment to improve the health of all Minnesotans.

Smart shopping for vegetables and fruits
It is possible to eat vegetables and fruits on a budget! The two best ways to meet your fresh vegetable and fruit needs and stay within your budget are to buy in-season produce and reduce waste.
Buying in season:
- Choose fresh vegetables and fruits that are in season. They are easy to find, have more flavor, and are usually less expensive. Your local farmers market is a great source of seasonal produce.
- Create a meal plan for the week that uses in-season vegetables and fruits prepared in different ways.
- Store fresh vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator or freezer soon after getting home from your shopping trip to make them last longer. Read more of

- Use overripe fruit in smoothies or baking.

Keep your food safe
- Choose produce that is free of all signs of bruising and spoilage. If the skin is broken, the surface of the produce is slimy, or there are soft spots on a portion of the vegetable or fruit, it will spoil more rapidly.
- Go directly home from the market. Foods will decline in quality and perishable foods like meats and eggs can pose food safety problems if left sitting in your car.
- Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before preparing produce.
- Wash produce before you use it, NOT when you bring it home. Washing produce before storage causes faster spoilage. Rinse under clean, running water just before preparing or eating. Do not use soap or detergent; it can get into produce and make you sick. Rub briskly to clean the surface. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
