Wabasha Farmer's Market

Pulling together people, providers, and producers

There’s a lot going on at Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center on a Monday afternoon.

The farmers market in the parking lot is the most visible sign of an interconnected effort to make the healthy choice the easy choice. Low-income clients are able to use their SNAP benefits at the market (the local food pantry is also in the medical center). SNAP-Ed Educator Annette Shepardson teaches cooking and nutrition classes for SNAP clients, where they learn different ways to use produce and get recipe ideas. Doctors, dietitians, nurses, and even social workers refer patients to her classes.

"I have had several participants come and see me from the classes. They have been very excited about what they learned and are looking around the market for new things to cook!” said Sara George, manager of the Wabasha Farmers Market manager. “It is like they can’t wait to try something new for themselves.”

The farmers market has another incentive for low-income shoppers: Market Bucks. “I have also had comments about how they didn’t know about the EBT/Market Bucks Program that is sponsored by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Center for Prevention,” George said. “They have been asking lots of questions about how it all works!”

This partnership between the Wabasha Farmer’s Market and Health and Nutrition is all about setting up people to succeed in making lasting healthy changes.
