Take the Road to Financial Security Workshop

Do you have a group of people who are really just getting started with thinking about planning for their future? Then the Take the Road to Financial Security Workshop is for you!

University of Minnesota Extension Educators can deliver this workshop to your group. Whether you are an employer, human resources director, community organization leader, church director, or other community leader, we can help your participants start to think about and act towards financial security in their later life.

About the Workshop

This one-hour workshop will help participants learn the factors that affect financial security in the later life. Through this workshop and the related materials they will receive as part of this training, participants will learn:

  • The benefits of planning for future financial security.
  • How to project their lifeline and the potential realities associated with living a third of their life after age 60.
  • What later life events are “normal” and how they may impact financial security. Time is spent discussing longer life expectancies, changing work and retirement patters, changing health and independence, family transitions, involvement with aging parents, and death.
  • Factors that may put an individual’s financial security at risk.
  • Action steps known to help financial security resources.
  • How to identify and access trustworthy financial resources.

After participating in the workshop, participants are expected to take one or more of the following actions:

  • Identify and reduce the factors that put them at risk of financial insecurity in later life.
  • Discuss their projected lifeline and the implications of financial security with others.
  • Identify and address one or more of the six normal events impacting later life financial security.
  • Initiate action steps to protect their financial security including:
    • Estimate their life expectancy.
    • Estimate the number of years before/after they will make changes in work/retirement.
    • Initiate/alter contributions to retirement saving plans, pensions, or savings.
    • Initiate/increase more than one source of income for later life.
    • Review savings and investment plans.
    • Discuss how to protect financial security with aging parents.
  • Utilize trustworthy decision making resources.

This workshop can be customized for your group and can be delivered in-person or online.
