Customized Training
The Families with Teens program offers customized training for professionals who work with families. Parent and family education builds family strengths and has been linked to increased well-being of children including:
- Reduced risk of drug/alcohol abuse and participation in other risky behaviors
- Fewer emotional and behavioral problems
- Success in school
- Better social skills
Positive outcomes for families also benefit communities by reducing expenditures for intervention, treatment and social and human services. The outcomes stem from helping families to:
- Improve family communication and decision making
- Strengthen parent-teen relationships
- Iincrease parental satisfaction and confidence in the parenting role during adolescence
Audience
Our training is for professionals working with families with children age 10 to 16 years. This includes, but is not limited to professionals, paraprofessionals and volunteers in public health, human services, schools, faith-based institutions, and community-based family and youth programs.
Approach
Our trainings are grounded in five guiding principles:
- The family is the first place of influence for the child.
- Educational efforts can enhance and facilitate parent behaviors that will influence positive developmental outcomes in their children.
- Individuals in families influence each other over time and that influence runs from parent to child and from child to parent.
- Many factors influence how adolescents develop and shape our assumptions about them.
- Positive parental behavior leads to healthy outcomes for youth resulting in positive outcomes for the larger community.
Training Options
- Two to four hour session presenting research-based information and education for use with families of adolescents. This includes information on normative adolescent development and building family strengths.
- Two to four hour session to develop a parent education plan tailored for their community. The plan includes products for parents on parenting skills and evaluation measures.
Training Arrangements
Our Family Relations staff work with contacts in the community to fit the training to the community. Training fee is dependent on:
- Expenses (mileage, lodging, materials provided, etc.)
- Method of training (remote or face-to-face workshop)
- Amount of training (hours above are suggestions only)
- Other arrangements specific to the site
