Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. (7/28/2008) - Visitors to the 27th annual Farmfest next month will have several opportunities to learn about renewable energy and other agricultural topics at this year's University of Minnesota exhibits.
The U of M's displays will include a model of a proposed system to convert wind power to anhydrous ammonia fertilizer, as well as an exhibit featuring the more than a dozen raw materials that the university is using to make energy. Farmfest, the state's largest farm-related gathering, takes place on August 5, 6 and 7 at the Gilfillan Estate in Redwood County, Minn.
Crop specialists from the university also will be on hand, along with experts on bovine tuberculosis and farm policy. Farmfest also is about fun: visitors can have their pictures taken with Goldy Gopher, win prizes and test their knowledge of agriculture, food and renewable fuels, all at the University of Minnesota tent.
In addition, nearly 70 Minnesota families will be honored by the university as Minnesota Farm Families of the Year 2008, for their contributions to agriculture and their local communities. Gov. Tim Pawlenty has proclaimed Thursday, Aug. 7 as Farm Family Recognition Day. The families will be honored at a ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. that day in the Forum Tent.
