U of M Extension dean announces administrative team changes

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/15/2007)-- University of Minnesota Extension Dean Bev Durgan recently announced the following changes to her administrative team:

Michael A. Schmitt, a 20-year University of Minnesota faculty member and administrator, has been named to the newly-created position of senior associate dean for extension and research. He will also serve as associate director for the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. Schmitt will provide leadership and vision for Extension research-based educational programs in agriculture, community vitality, family development, natural resources and youth development.

Dick Senese, associate dean for community vitality since May 2001, has accepted an expanded role, associate dean for community vitality and public engagement. Senese will provide leadership for Extension’s involvement with the University’s public engagement initiative.

David Werner, a 27-year Extension employee, has been named to the newly-created position of chief operating officer. Werner served as director of field operations for southern Minnesota for the past four years.

Lee Raeth, formerly director of field operations for northern Minnesota, has been named director of Extension field operations for the entire state.

Jeanne Markell, Extension associate dean for government relations, has been named the 2008 Ralph L. Tabor Extension Fellow by the National Association of Counties (NACo). Markell will assume the fellowship in January 2008 in Washington, D.C. In the position, she will work to guide and facilitate the national partnership between counties, Cooperative Extension and the nation’s public universities.

Durgan also announced the appointment of Matt Musel as Extension development officer. Musel has spent the past year as a major gifts officer for the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS).
