U of M offers online course about teens and their families through May 31

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/29/2007) -- What is normal teen behavior? How do families change through the teen years? These and other questions are addressed in a new online course, "What's New with Teens and Their Families? Research Update for Professionals," developed by the University of Minnesota Extension Service.

The course, available through May 31, 2007, helps professionals working with families of teens explore the latest research in: 1) normal adolescent development and what it means for the parent-adolescent relationship; and 2) the two-way relationship between teens and their larger family system, including child agency and parenting styles.

Course registration must be completed by Feb. 28, 2007.

"Participants will have opportunities to reflect on course content and explore what it means for their work with families," said Kathleen Olson, Extension educator in family relations.

The online course is appropriate for school staff, counselors, social workers, faith-based staff, parent educators and public health staff. Those who work with teens and their families in community organizations and agencies are encouraged to participate.

"Participants report a significant increase in knowledge in all content areas of the course," Olson added, "including the importance of teens feeling as if they can contribute ideas and opinions within their families, and their willingness to do so."

Registration is $45 per person which includes continuing education units (CEUs). When three or more people register from the same agency or institution, the cost is $40 per person. Registration is open through Feb. 28, 2007, and the course remains open until May 31, 2007. Participants are allowed to go in and out of the course as many times as they wish.
