This vast set of ecosystems is incredibly biodiverse. With bogs, upland conifer forests, mixed forest, small and medium-sized lakes, two major river systems, and an interesting geological history, the Sax-Zim Bog offers a lot for naturalists to enjoy during any season.This training will take place at the Lois King Education Center at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center. We will spend the majority of our time outdoors. There is no better way to learn about a biome than to get out and experience it first hand and early fall can be great time to visit and learn about the Northwoods.This course will take place over one week, from August 12 to 16.Expect to be outside in various environmental conditions (light rain, warm temps, muddy conditions, etc). Hiking will be primarily along gravel roads and level boardwalks, with mostly level terrain. About the North Woods, Great Lakes course

This core course is tailored to Minnesota’s unique Laurentian Mixed Forest biome. The largest biome of the state, it covers over 23 million acres of northeast Minnesota. The region contains a variety of landscapes, including swampland, bogs, vast forests, lakes and exposed bedrock.

North Woods, Great Lakes covers geology, glaciers, water, wildlife, humans, ecology, and botany through lectures, classroom discussions, field trips, fieldwork, small group work and reading.

You must complete 40 hours of training to become a certified Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer.

You must choose a group capstone project to complete before finishing the course.
