A voice for rural Minnesota
The family of Mary Page, who served as Olivia mayor, Renville County commissioner and U of M regent, has chosen to honor her memory in a way that was as action-oriented as she was. They have formed the Mary Page Community-University Partnerships Fund to support community-driven projects through Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP), which is part of University of Minnesota Extension.
"Mom was comfortable challenging the status quo," said her daughter, Marcia Page. Those who weren't in Mary's living room in Olivia, Minn. might believe that "CR" time referred to coffee and rolls. But Marcia recalls that it was the 1960s when her mother held these gatherings for "consciousness-raising."
In all of her roles and as founding member of the RSDP, which connects people in Greater Minnesota to the University of Minnesota, Mary fought for rural issues.
In all, she served more than 50 organizations and helped lay a foundation for improved public health. In addition to the Page family's generosity in founding the fund, Marcia has created a dollar-for-dollar challenge match for new contributions.
