What is a cockroach? Cockroaches are probably the most persistent household pests in Minnesota. They can contaminate food making it unfit to eat. They eat food, glue, leather, bookbindings, and even television and microwave wiring. Although cockroaches are active at night they can be seen during the day if disturbed or numerous. Cockroaches are 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches long, have flattened, oval bodies, long antennae and a head hidden by a shield-like covering. How do cockroaches enter our buildings? There is always a potential to move cockroaches from one building to another. Cockroaches or their eggs could be in a bag or box, on clothing, in furniture or merchandise that is purchased and carried into buildings. In some instances cockroaches crawl in from the outside or from a break in the sanitary sewer. CONTROL
If an infestation occurs, apply an insecticide where roaches hide or run, such as along baseboards, behind stoves and refrigerators and in cracks and crevices. Insect traps can be used to locate the area where cockroaches are hiding. Be sure traps are tight against the wall. Apply insecticides near the largest catches. Buildings with multiple dwellings probably require treating several units. Isolate individual units by plugging space around pipes, conduit, and ducts to reduce invasions from adjacent units. Insecticides are available in ready-to-use liquid forms. Read the label and follow directions carefully. Insect bait in solids or dusts is also available. Also, dust boric acid behind and under refrigerators, stoves, and sinks. Cockroaches are not greatly affected by aerosols, bombs and fogger insecticides. Ultrasonic or sound devices are ineffective. Store chemicals in a safe place where children can not reach them. Do not allow children or pets near treated surfaces until spray has dried. In summary, a combination of sanitation, building modification, application of insecticides, and persistence can control these pests. |
