Black Walnut Management

Mulches suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Woodchips, straw, sawdust, bark, shredded corn cobs, plastic sheets, or fabric mats can be used. Keep mulches 1 to 2 inches away from tree stems to avoid heat buildup. Because organic mulches use nitrogen when they decompose, you may need to add fertilizer around trees. Some mulches may attract small rodents that build nests and then feed on tree seedlings in fall and winter.
