Black Walnut Management

Planting walnut in pure rather than mixed stands helps to maximize tree value and simplify planting and management. However, mixed stands reduce pest and environmental problems, have more aesthetic appeal, increase biodiversity, and may have less expensive seedling costs. Different tree species may be planted in alternate rows or mixed within a row. Pines help control weeds by shading the ground, and they encourage walnut stems to grow straight.
