During thinnings or clearcuts, instead of felling unmerchantable trees, kill the trees standing in order to provide snags for birds that feed on insects beneath the bark or that hollow out the wood for nesting holes. Snags are useful to the largest variety of wildlife when they are at least eight inches in diameter.
