Understory control is most important, but if dense shade is produced by a high canopy, then you should also remove approximately 20 to 40% of this canopy, leaving 60 to 80% crown cover. This shelterwood canopy provides seed, intermittent sunlight needed by small seedlings, and enough shade to discourage growth of competing vegetation.
