Harvesting selected trees scattered throughout the woodland will regenerate shade tolerant species, but not oaks. Selection harvests all too often remove the largest and highest quality trees. The poor quality trees left behind occupy valuable growing space and become the seed source for future generations. This high-grading does not develop quality hardwood timber.
