Acorn weevils may destroy up to one-half of the acorns in a good seed year and nearly all in a poor seed year. Wildlife also eat large quantities of acorns. Seedling numbers, therefore, are high only following years of good seed production, when there are excess acorns not damaged by weevils or consumed by wildlife.
