The natural ranges of all these species overlap but are not identical. Their site requirements also differ. Northern red oak and white oak prefer moist, fertile sites. Black oak and northern pin oak tolerate drier sites. Bur oak is the most drought tolerant. Swamp white oak prefers moist bottomland sites.
