If the stand you are managing is overmature and it is not possible to stagger the harvest at 10 year intervals, then the entire stand could be clearcut at one time. But, leave islands of standing hardwood trees, preferably aspen, for every 10 acres clearcut. These islands will continue to provide minimal grouse habitat, until the young stand regenerates and grows to a height and density that grouse prefer.
