During winter, grouse feed heavily on the male flower buds from older aspen as well as flower buds of associated tree species including birch, hazel, and ironwood. During spring grouse eat aspen catkins. As green-up occurs, grouse feed on aspen leaves and green herbaceous vegetation on the forest floor.
