Once an aspen stand has regenerated, trees grow rapidly, and a densely stocked stand thins naturally. Growth rarely stagnates. Individual aspens vary greatly in growth rates and trees that fall behind soon stop growing and die. Artificial thinning is unnecessary to produce pulpwood. Thinning activities may damage residual trees leading to more frequent disease infections.
