While aspen will reproduce from seed, natural or artificial seeding is less common than root suckering on existing forest sites. Aspen, though, is a good pioneer species and will grow from seed on nonforested sites such as spoil banks and abandoned fields and pastures. Good seed crops occur every four to five years. Seeds ripen in May or June and are wind dispersed. Seeds are viable for only two or three weeks.
