If the stand is sodded or there is dense brush or unmerchantable trees in the stand, avoid harvesting when there is snow cover, during early summer or when the soil is saturated. Kill as much competing vegetation as possible during logging by using a full-tree or tree-length harvesting system or by driving logging equipment over the entire site to trample the brush. If dense brush remains alive after the harvest, remove it by cutting, shearing with a sharp bulldozer blade, herbicide application or prescribed burn.
