Site preparation can be accomplished by prescribed burning when other methods are impractical or the stand is brushy, sodded or too poorly stocked for a commercial harvest. An aspen stand should be burned within one year after harvesting, preferably in the spring before growth starts. Consult a forester knowledgeable about fire behavior and fire weather before planning a prescribed burn.
