The number of root suckers that develop is proportional to the degree of cutting with the greatest number arising after a complete clearcut. If only merchantable trees are harvested and nonmerchantable trees and brush are left growing, the number of root suckers will be reduced. For optimum aspen regeneration, all trees should be cut and brush should be crushed.
