Root suckers grow most abundantly when harvesting is done in such a way that the parent root system is not damaged and the soil is not compacted. The parent root system is least disturbed if harvesting occurs when the soil is relatively dry or frozen. Avoid harvesting when the soil is water saturated, since heavy logging equipment may compact the soil and injure aspen roots.
