Aspen can regenerate from root suckers and from seed. But, aspen nearly always can be regenerated from root suckers if the stand is completely clearcut. Felling an aspen tree prevents a hormone found in the tree's crown from inhibiting root suckering. Clearcutting also warms the soil, gives root suckers plenty of sunlight, and reduces undesirable vegetation which may compete for sunlight, moisture and nutrients.
