Aspen is found on a wide range of soils but it grows best on moist soils which have a high silt-plus-clay content and are rich in lime. Soil moisture conditions favor aspen if there is groundwater between 2 1/2 and 8 feet below the surface. If aspen is being grown for timber production, it should be encouraged only on good sites.
