Land management by woodland owners, farmers, and other private landowners can critically impact natural resources, including forests, prairies, fish and wildlife habitats, soil, and water resources. Most landowners want to protect their land’s long-term productivity and biological diversity, but some need financial assistance for conservation practices for which they incur costs, while the public shares the benefits. This publication briefly describes cost-share, loan, grant, easement/land retirement, and land donation programs available to private landowners or that could be applied to private lands to acquire, manage, conserve, and protect natural resources in Minnesota.
There are 52 programs described here. To simplify the sorting process, refer to the index on page 15 or contact one of the following agencies and ask what programs are available for the type of management that interests you: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Soil and Water Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, or your county Extension office. Staff members are knowledgeable about these programs and can refer you to the appropriate agency or organization for assistance.
Funding availability, participation requirements, project priorities, and geographic focus change frequently. Funds may not be available for the time, place, or practice that you need.
