H i g h l i g h t s

Minnesota's Dairy Industry:
  • Minnesota is the nation's fifth largest milk-producing state.
  • Dairy production accounted for approximately 13% of the total value of agricultural production in Minnesota for 1997.
Employment Impacts:
  • Dairy producers and processors employ more than 22,037 persons.
  • Other industries that supply inputs to the dairy industry or to firms directly supplying the industry employ 22,222 persons.
  • The 44,259 employees working in dairy production, processing, and supply industries create additional local jobs through their spending. In total, their spending adds another 9,437 jobs in Minnesota.
  • Overall, the spin-off industries (suppliers and consumer sectors) employ over 31,659 persons.
  • In total, the dairy industry supports 53,696 jobs in Minnesota.
Income Impacts:
  • Dairy producers and processors earned incomes of $1,022 million in 1997.
  • Other spin-off industries earned over $1,398 million because of the dairy industry in 1997.
