Calendula, Calendula officinalis, is an annual flower or herb with excellent cold tolerance. It is easy to grow from seed. Plant the seeds directly in a sunny location as soon as the soil can be worked. As an herb, the petals are used as a tangy seasoning or as a pretty garnish. It also can be used as a yellow dye and as a topical ointment for antibiotic purposes. Calendula is very nice in a cottage or cutting garden because it blooms continuously in a broad range of yellow and orange colors.
