Common chives, Allium shoenoprasum, is a perennial that is easily grown from seed or divisions and is hardy to Zone 3. Chives is a common garnish for baked potatoes, soups, and salads. The lavender flowers of chives are great added to fresh salad greens. Pinching the plants to keep them from self-seeding will keep them from multiplying in your garden.
