Introduction

Dear Parents,

There seems to be a widespread belief that the teen years are a difficult time. It is common for adults to smile knowingly or even wince when they hear a reference to teens or to the parenting of teens. The parenting of teens can be challenging. But there are also rewards and joys in the parenting of teens. We believe that both teens and the parents of those teens would benefit from a more positive approach to teen-parent relationships. That is what The Growing Season is all about.

  1. Offering some thoughts and ideas about teen development and parent-teen relationships based on research and the experiences of many parents.
  2. Providing activities and questions to stimulate reflection and discussion.
  3. Listing resources for further information.

Here's what's covered in each chapter:

Parenting Teens Today looks at circumstances of our life and times that affect teens and that provide the context in which parenting takes place today.

Perception examines the effects of misperceptions and self-fulfilling prophecies on teen-parent relationships.

Development considers typical developmental changes of teens and parents of teens.

Communication explores that very important part of the relationship between teens and parents, with an emphasis on listening.

Conflict offers some suggestions for managing the inevitable conflicts that will occasionally occur in families with teens.
