Parenting Teens Today

Giving Equal Time to the Joys and the Challenges of Parenting Teens

Parenting teens includes joys as well as challenges. Being a positive parent means paying attention to the joys and not just focusing on the challenges. Being aware of the positive side of parenting teens will help you enjoy your teen more.

The Joys

Think about things that make you proud of your teen:
  • When he cleans his room without being asked.
  • When she learns a new skill.
  • When he acts responsibly.
  • When she shows concern for others.
  • When you are able to have a pleasant conversation.

The Challenges

Teens are at the stage where they need to figure out who they are. They will challenge you with:
  • Differing opinions.
  • Wanting more things than the family budget will allow.
  • Deciding when and how they will complete chores and schoolwork.
  • Deciding what is important to them, especially when it comes to what they will be responsible for.

Being Positive

  • Consciously think about the good stuff your teens are doing.
  • Compliment teens when they do the right thing or take responsibility for their actions.
  • Point out something positive every chance you get.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Get support.
