Information about the complete publication and how to order it is available here. IntroductionThe legal experience of ending a relationship is among the most difficult aspects of divorce for parents. This is true for a number of reasons: (1) many people do not know legal terms or the laws governing their situation, and so they are often dealing with unknowns; (2) the cost of divorce can be high if there is a lot of disagreement between divorcing parents; and (3) the court process itself tends to be adversarial, creating "winners" and "losers." Presented in this session is some information about the legal process of divorce. The information is in no way intended to take the place of legal advice, but rather to give you better understanding of the process. Divorce laws vary from state to state and it is crucial to find out about the laws that govern your area and your situation. However, this introduction will give you a basic understanding of the legal world of divorce. One tool that helps with the legal aspects of divorce is mediation. Mediation helps both parents come together to make decisions that will govern their future, and so avoid putting those decisions in the hands of the courts. This section discusses the areas of divorce in which mediation is used, and how the mediation process may help you and the other parent make decisions that you both can live with. Contents
