Tobacco

A lot of false messages have developed about smoking. Knowing the myths and understanding the facts will help you talk with your teen about "lighting up" and khat.

Myth - Smoking is cool

Fact - Tobacco can cause bad breath, stained teeth, wheezing, coughing, phlegm, and makes your hair and clothes smell bad. Smoking is not the road to popularity. The idea that "everybody's doing it" just doesn't apply to tobacco use. A nationwide survey in 2008 revealed that only 6.8% of 8th graders and 20.4% of 12th graders had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days. The rates are even lower for smokeless tobacco. In addition, approximately three-quarters of 12th graders “mostly agree” or “agree” that smoking is a dirty habit and that they would prefer to date people who don’t smoke.

Myth - Smoking will help with weight loss

Fact - Smoking is not likely to cause visible changes in weight. Exercise is a healthier and longer lasting approach to weight loss. Moreover, the health benefits of not smoking or quitting far outweigh the problems of gaining weight.

Myth Tobacco can't hurt young and healthy people.

Fact – Although teenagers probably know that using tobacco can cause long-term illness like emphysema or cancer, they are probably unconcerned because the consequences seem so far into the future. In the short term, smoking reduces the lung's ability to function, making breathing really tough during exercise and athletics. Cigarettes also contain arsenic, ammonia, and formaldehyde - not very healthy!

Myth - Smoking and chewing are cheap habits

Fact - At an average of $4.50-$5.00 per pack, a person who smokes a pack a day spends over $31.50 per week or $1,638 per year on cigarettes. A 15-year-old who quits smoking and puts the money into savings would have nearly $250,000 by age 45.

Myth - Quitting is easy

Fact – The majority of adult smokers become addicted to tobacco as teenagers. And unfortunately, most people who try to quit are not successful. It can take 8 to 10 tries to be successful. Many people need help quitting. Visit www.smokefree.gov for more information.

Share a few of the above facts with the young people you care about. Also, listen to their comments to help them make wise decisions. If you belong to a culture where tobacco is sacred and reserved for special occasions (like some American Indian cultures), discuss its honored role and the need to respect rather than abuse it. By choosing smoke-free environments, parents not only protect their family from the hazardous dangers of second-hand smoke but also send an important message about their family values.

Khat

A harmful narcotic is Khat(Qat). Many people believed it was ok to chew Khat for young men in Somalia. However, it is against the law in America. People caught chewing Khat can be sent to jail. Following are facts to discuss with your teens. Chewing khat may create a feeling of ecstasy, along with increased alertness. However, it also increases one’s heart rate and blood pressure. After chewing khat, users may become depressed or irritable, have a loss of appetite or difficulty sleeping. Long-term khat use has been found to cause tooth decay, ulcers, irregular heartbeat, and may worsen other mental disorders. It causes users to constantly divert income into Khat chewing, and ignore families' needs.
