  • Dairy Manure Education and Research
    The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota conducts research and provides information about environmentally sound and economically feasible use of animal manure and wastes for dairy producers in Minnesota. Manure management information is required for the dairy producer to meet mandatory state and federal governmental regulations in the storage, handling, and utilization of animal manure and waste products. The proper management of manure and other waste is needed for both water and air quality concerns.
  • 319 Milkhouse Wastewater Research and Demonstration Project
    This research and demonstration project was established to identify and evaluate effective methods of treating milk house wastewater effluent. The project is to help small and mid-size dairy producers comply with milk house wastewater environmental regulations, to have a system that is reliable and be economical to install and operate. EPA 319 funding through MPCA runs from 2001-2005 for the installed demonstration systems in Carver and Wright Counties, and from 2004 thru 2007 for installed demonstration systems in Goodhue and Winona Counties. Milk House wastewater includes:
    1. the wash water, cleaning agents/sanitizers used to clean the milking equipment, the pipeline and the bulk tank;
    2. residual milk which remains in the pipeline, receiver jar and bulk tank which is removed by the wash water.
