The University of Minnesota Extension is offering three crop production update programs in East Central MN in February 2008.
Do you have glyphosate resistant weeds? Giant ragweed is the latest weed confirmed resistant to glyphosate, and it’s been found in Minnesota. This issue will be discussed at the CROP PEST MANAGEMENT UPDATE on Friday, February 1st, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the American Legion in North Branch. Dave Nicolai, U of M Regional Extension Educator in Hutchinson, will present “Glyphosate Resistance: What’s Next” and “What are you Really Spraying: Update on Active Ingredients and Crop Rotation Restrictions”. Ken Ostlie, U of M Extension Entomologist, will present “Corn and Soybean Insect Update” and Chad Barnick, Barnick Insurance Agency, will discuss Crop Insurance Update for 2008. Leroy Sandven, Chisago County FSA, will conclude the program with a Farm Bill Update. The Crop Pest Management Update is a program of the University of Minnesota Extension. These issues, and more, will be discussed at the CORN AND SOYBEAN PRODUCTION UDATE is Tuesday, February 5th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Embers in Milaca. Dan Martens, U of M Extension Educator, and Kevin Dahlman, Dahlco Seeds, will discuss “Corn Variety Trends: Are We Stacked for Life?” and “Corn on Corn”. Jodi DeJong-Hughes, U of M Regional Extension Educator in Marshall, will discuss “Tillage: Effects on Fuel Efficiency, Residue, and Soil Structure”, and John Lamb, Extension Soil Scientist, will discuss “Corn and Soybean Fertility”, including the results of the 2007 nitrogen plot location in Isanti. The Corn and Soybean Production Update is a program of the University of Minnesota Extension. There is a $10 fee to attend the meeting and registration is taken at the door. As the price of wheat continues to increase, so does the interest in growing it. Making wheat a profitable crop on your farm will be the focus of the SOUTHERN WHEAT TOUR on Wednesday, February 20th from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm at the Kanabec County Courthouse (Meeting Room 3) in Mora. Topics Include: “Does is Really Pay to Grow Wheat in East Central Minnesota?” and “Wheat Variety Selection” by Jochum Wiersma, U of M Extension Small Grain Specialist. Doug Holen, U of M Regional Extension Educator in Fergus Falls will present “Winter vs Spring Wheat: Does it Matter?” and “Disease and Insect Management”. Krishona Martinson, U of M Regional Extension Educator in Andover will discuss “Weed Control Options” and “Wheat as a Companion Crop”. George Simpkins from Bayer will conclude the program with a Bayer Product Update. The Southern Wheat Tour is a program of the University of Minnesota Extension and is sponsored by Bayer Crop Sciences. There is a $5 fee to attend the meeting and registration is taken at the door.
