Soils and Drainage Field Day: August 21 in Benson, MN

Jodi Dejong-Hughes
University of Minnesota Extension Service

In a joint effort between University of Minnesota Extension and AGVISE laboratories, we present an opportunity for crop producers and agricultural professionals to hear the latest in sound drainage and water management strategies. Come see first hand the effects of tile drainage at Dean Evenson’s farm South of Benson.

Explore the differences in soil structural properties, nutrient movement and yield over time in soil pits dug in a field that has been half tile drained. Speakers will be a mix of University and Industry staff including Craig Schrader (U of M Extension), Cindy Evenson (AGVISE), Jodi DeJong-Hughes (U of M Extension), and Paul Bruns (Precision Consulting Services). Topics will address soil quality indicators, controlled drainage structures, mobile and non-mobile nutrient movement through the soil, and a case study of yield effects from fields that have been tile drained.

Two S&W credits will be available as well as refreshments. Contact Jodi DeJong-Hughes at 888-241-3261 for more information, or view the brochure online.

Directions from Benson: Go South on Hwy 29 approximately 8 miles. Turn West on Swift Co. 6 towards Appleton. Go 2 miles and turn North on 30th Ave SW. The field will be on the East side of the road. Watch for signs.
