As the 2006 harvest season draws to a close, the University of Minnesota Extension Service and MCPR invite you to attend the joint offering of the MCPR Trade Show and the Crop Pest Management Short Course. This year both will be offered together December 5-7 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The shared program offerings will include:
- Future Focus Keynote Address – MCPR Dec. 5, 1 to 4:30 PM
- Pesticide Safety Education (PAT) Recertification Program. Dec. 6, 8 am to 5 PM
- Technical Service Provider Training. Dec. 6, 8 am to 5 PM
- Crop Pest Management Short Course. Dec. 6-7, 8 am to 5 PM both days

The 2006 CPM Short Course and MCPR Trade Show will focus both plenary sessions around the theme of "Future Perspectives of the Agricultural Input Industry." Invited speakers from private industry and universities will address issues related to bio-fuels, product development for future markets, and future mission of the land grant university.
The MCPR's keynote address and annual meeting will start the three day program on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 5. Alex A. Avery, Director of Research and Education of the Hudson Institute's Center for Global Food Issues, will give the keynote address, while Tim Gerlach, Director of the American Lung Association of Minnesota’s Outdoor Air Programs, will discuss E-85 and its future.
The Crop Pest Management Short Course will open with the General Session on December 6. Speakers from academia and private industry will address the theme as they share their vision of changes and challenges as they pertain to the land grant university, the seed industry, agribusiness cooperatives, and factors effecting international markets and trading. Phil Pardey, Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, will be the keynote speaker addressing economic aspects of international trade and policies and its effects on US agriculture.
The CPM Short Course will continue on Wednesday afternoon in concurrent sessions offering topics in insect and disease management, sediment control in river basins and lakes, weed management, and a revised look at soybean aphid thresholds. On Thursday, December 7, concurrent sessions will offer topics in:
- Disease Management-Oil Crops: Sclerotinia control in sunflowers, Sudden Death Syndrome in soybeans, Soybean Cyst Nematode management with variety selection, and Asian soybean rust spore trapping and modeling.
- Insect and Weed Management: glyphosate resistance in horseweed, nitrogen accumulation in annual weeds, corn rootworm insecticide and transgenics trials, and the value of IPM.
- Nutrient Management: iron deficiency chlorosis and its relationship with nitrate nitrogen, nutrient and tillage strategies for second year corn, phosphorus management for long-term corn and soybean production, and phosphorus and potassium management in different tillage systems.
- Crop Management: precipitation trends in Minnesota, the truth about continuous corn, soybean aphid thresholds, and applying remote sensing for nitrogen management.
The full CPM Short Course agenda can be viewed by visiting the Institute for Ag Professionals website (www.iap.umn.edu). All concurrent sessions will run for 50 minutes and offer 1.0 CCA CEU/topic with a total of 12.0 CEUs offerings for Certified Crop Advisors.
The Pesticide Applicator Training (PAT) recertification program for categories A (General Ground) and C (Field Crop Pest Management) is planned for all day Wednesday, December 6, and will be the last offering for recertification in 2006. The NRCS will provide the Technical Service Providers training needed for TSP-certification or renewal the same day. The new curriculum will emphasize manure management and condenses 32 hours of training into 7 hours, allowing attendees to attain certification in a single day.
