Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) is by far the greatest contributor to yield losses of all the soybean pests currently in the United States. Yield losses up to 30% have been measured from SCN without any visible field symptoms. Developing a better understanding of SCN and its management should help lead to a decreased impact of this yield robber on soybean profitability.
Plan to attend one of the University of Minnesota Extension Service's upcoming "Crops Clinics: Soybean Cyst Nematode and Other Soybean Pests". These hands-on sessions are geared towards farmers and interested Ag professionals who would like to gain in-depth training on SCN and its management. At each session, half of the time will be spent "in the classroom" and half will be spent in the field scouting for SCN and other soybean pests.
Along with a discussion on SCN management, the program will include a discussion on sampling for SCN, identification of SCN and other soybean pests, interactions between SCN and other soybean diseases, and an update on soybean rust. Take home materials will be provided at each session. Dean Malvick, Extension Plant Pathologist with the University of Minnesota, will be presenting at these sessions along with Liz Stahl, Ryan Miller and Dave Nicolai, Regional Extension Educators in Crops with the University of Minnesota. Jim Orf, University of Minnesota Soybean Breeder will also be present at the Gaylord and Atwater locations.
