Manure Handling For the 21st Century: August 11th, 2005

Tim Dolan and David Schmidt, Extension Educators

  • See all the latest technologies in manure handling in one location.
  • Attend educational presentations related to manure application and management.
  • Visit displays of all types of products and services associated with manure handling.

All this can be done in one day at the third biennial Upper Midwest Manure Handling Expo to be held on August 11th at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca. The all day event is FREE and open to the public. Previous years' Expos have attracted nearly 1,000 manure applicators, farmers, and vendors from across the Midwest.

This year’s theme is “Manure Handling in the 21st Century.” All of the newest technologies that preserve manure nutrients, enhance the profitability of manure application, and protect the environment will be featured and discussed. Southern Minnesota, like neighboring Iowa and Wisconsin, is a region where intensive agriculture of crop and livestock production, tile drainage, karst geology, and surface water all come together. These factors lead commercial manure haulers and livestock producers to look for advanced equipment and technology that can apply manure at appropriate agronomic rates and placement needed for both the betterment of crop production and water protection.

Visitors to the Manure Handling Expo 2005 will participate in a full day of field equipment demonstrations, vendor displays, and education sessions. The Expo includes field demonstrations of both solid and liquid manure application equipment, as well as a wide variety of displays on all types of products and services associated with manure handling (e.g. agitation equipment, pit additives, aeration equipment, solids separation equipment, manure management consultants, insurance, manure testing labs, loading equipment, compost equipment).

Manure applicators, crop and livestock farmers and others in the manure affiliated businesses are encouraged to attend. The trade show takes place from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The equipment demonstrations will be held from 9:00am to 11:00am and again from 2:00 to 4:00pm . The educational events and activities start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m.

The extensive educational opportunities include both Inside Presentations and Outdoor Activities.
