4-H Communications Arts Contest Winners Announced

The annual 4-H Communications Arts Contest was held for the South Central Minnesota Region in Mankato on Saturday, April 4. Youth contestants participated in creative writing, photo journalism, public speaking, and interpretive reading categories. Contestants were from Waseca, Steele, Blue Earth, Faribault, LeSueur and Rice counties. First place winners in the Intermediate and Senior division advance to State competition in June.

Winners in Creative Writing in the Senior Division were Nathaniel England, first place, Faribault county and Joe Ehrich, second place, also of Faribault County. In the Beginner Division, Rebekah England of Faribault County placed first and Gretchen Kliewer of Blue Earth County placed second. There were no entries in the Intermediate Division.

In the Interpretive Reading Division, Emily Roycraft of Waseca County placed first. In the Beginner Division, Gretchen Kliewer of Blue Earth County placed first and Kali Schwartz of LeSueur County placed second. There were no Senior Division entries.

In Public Speaking, Cassandra Bonnett of Blue Earth County placed first.

Participating from Faribault County were, Luke Loveall, Interpretive Reading; Maggie Loveall, Interpretive Reading; Nathaniel England, Creative Writing; Rebekah England, Creative Writing; Joe Ehrich, Creative Writing and Brett Stevermer, Public Speaking.

The overall theme of the state-wide contest is Youth Against Prejudice: Living in a Multi-Cultural Society. Sponsors of this event are the Center for 4-H Youth Development, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and Subway restaurants. Winners at the state level will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
