For many communities tourism is an important economic development strategy. Successful community tourism development requires a long-term vision, and a commitment that makes that vision a reality. It starts with a set of core values.
- Authenticity & sense of place
- Quality Experience
- Balance Cost & Benefits
- Shared Benefits and Local Control
The University of Minnesota Tourism Center first profiled the four communities you will hear from in 1991. We followed the communities over the years and returned in 2010 to document changes over time in this case study video. Hear from community leaders in each community as they share their experiences and provide valuable insights on using tourism as an economic development strategy.
