Soybean is a vital part of the Minnesota economy

Minnesota is the third largest soybean-producing state in the United States. Farmers grow 6.25 million acres of soybean with an average yield of 41 bushels per acre. Through research done at the University of Minnesota, the growing range for soybeans has been able to expand northward through the state.

What we offer

Ongoing research and education by Extension supports monitoring and prevention of soybean cyst nematode, soybean aphids, and other pests and diseases that impact crops. We post regular updates on the state of Minnesota soybean crops and challenges facing soybean farmers due to disease or weather at any given time. We conduct research, field days, and variety plot tours. Tools like the soybean disease diagnostic and the guide to replanting decisions help soybean farmers make the best decisions in any given situation. Special events like the Soybean Symposium highlight research findings for crop consultants and other ag professionals.

An example of our impact: U.S. soybean growers can save $1.3 billion over the next 15 years using Extension's "250 threshold" to battle the soybean aphid.
