The University of Minnesota Institute for Ag Professionals is offering a half-day training workshop on Goss's Wilt of corn and herbicide mode of action at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center in Crookston, MN on Tuesday, August 26. Dr. Dean Malvick, Extension Corn and Soybean Plant Pathologist, Dr. Jeff Gunsolus, Extension Weed Specialist, and Dave Nicolai, Extension Crops Educator will lead the workshop.

Goss's wilt and leaf blight is a significant disease of corn that can reduce yields of susceptible hybrids over 40 percent. This disease has been increasing and spreading in Minnesota (as well as North Dakota) and has become a problem in northwestern Minnesota corn fields. The Goss's disease training workshop will be conducted at a Goss's wilt field plot site.

Since the agricultural landscape of northwest Minnesota now includes significant acres of corn and soybeans alongside sugar beets and small grains both ag professionals and growers will need to develop a deep understanding of herbicide mode of action and crop injury symptoms for these crops. We have developed a very sophisticated training plot protocol which allows for hands-on training and visualization of these symptoms.

The workshop begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. The program starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. and ends by noon, followed by lunch, on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center located at 2900 University Ave in Crookston. We will meet at Agricultural Research Center (Main Office). Watch for signs.

Online registration, which includes reference materials and lunch, cost $60 per person prior to August 26, 2014 or $70 per person on the day of the event. Three (3) pest management CEUs for Certified Crop Advisors have been applied for with the Minnesota CCA office. Registration is limited to 60 participants.
