The Dean and Director's Award to Distinguished Extension Faculty was established in 1982 under the leadership of Norman Brown, Dean and Director (1980-1984), to recognize excellence in performing the work of Extension. It carries a $1,000 stipend and is available annually to one Extension campus-based faculty member and one field-based Extension educator. Selections are made by a committee from nominations by Extension colleagues.

He is especially appreciated for helping shape the Community Vitality capacity area, the transition within the Extension Service, the future of county governments, the leadership of Minnesota's Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and ultimately, all Minnesotans.
