What Candidates Should Know About the Search Process and Timelines

It is appropriate for hiring authorities to inform candidates about expected search process and timelines. Some hiring authorities are conscientious about letting all candidates know the search process and expected time frames. For example, does the process include first round interviews, phone screening interviews, second round interviews, and/or is a search committee used? Also, is there an appropriate person to whom to direct questions? Is it the hiring authority him/herself or someone on a search committee?

In terms of timing, when does the hiring authority predict candidates for first interviews and final interviews will be selected, and when is an offer to be extended?

If hiring authorities do not inform you of the process, it is okay to politely inquire. If you do not know if you are a candidate yet, all that you need to know is general information. If you are far along in the hiring process, it is expected that you be informed.
