Do You Know What Job(s) You Want?

Before you can start job seeking, you really have to know what kinds of jobs/work you are qualified and interested in doing. Do you have an idea of the job titles/classifications you want to apply for? Do you know (in general) what educational and experiential requirements are necessary for that job title? Do you know (in general) what hiring authorities are looking for in a strong candidate? Have you talked to folks doing similar work to know what their jobs are "really like"? Here at the University of Minnesota, the details are different for different positions within the same classification, but there are some generic similarities among all jobs within a certain classification. Before you job hunt, you should know what those are.

Too often, job-seekers go directly to the job listings and start reading the descriptions even before they know what they want. Job seekers sometimes believe that they'll figure out if they are interested/qualified in a job just by reading a job description. So, given enough time and job openings to read, they'll eventually come across the job that's right, right? Probably not. If you aren't really sure what you are interested/qualified to do then reading those listings becomes overwhelming, if not downright confusing. You read a job description, "Will I like that? Can I do that?" and have no way to figure out the answer!

There are two things to do in order to come up with the jobs that are right for you:
