Advisory Committees

Citizens' Advisory Committee

We are seeking nominations for Extension's Citizens' Advisory Committee. Members provide a grassroots perspective on the operations, strategies and impacts of Extension across Minnesota.

Potential candidates should have:

  • knowledge of or experience with Extension
  • an interest in the future of Extension education and research
  • availability to attend two annual meetings (late summer and spring)

This volunteer committee provides consultative support to the Extension Dean. The committee meets two times a year to discuss Extension priorities. See Guiding Principles to learn more about the committee and its work.

  • Rick Anderson

    Rick Anderson

    Lyon County, Balaton

    Rick served for 31 years as Lyon County's Park Director and managed fairgrounds for 16 of those years. Rick is now in his fourth year as a county commissioner in Lyon County. He has a broad background in community and public services serving on many community and local boards over the years: school board, township board, First Responders, Statewide Legacy Advisory Committee. Most recently he was appointed by the Governor to the committee overseeing the spending of Legacy Dollars in Greater MN.

  • Jerry Arneson

    Jerry Arneson

    Clay County, Moorhead

    Jerry graduated with a degree in Agronomy and Crop Production Management from North Dakota State University. He is currently the director of the Clay County Fair Board and has been a member of multiple boards in Moorhead. Jerry is a former Agassiz Ambassador for the Red River Valley. He also served as an Extension educator in Clay County. Jerry was involved in the Roseau County 4-H program and now serves as a 4-H Leader in Clay County.

  • David Benson

    David Benson

    Nobles County, Bigelow

    David was a Nobles County Commissioner for 20 years, serving on local and regional Extension Committees. He was a member of the Association of MN Counties (AMC) Extension Committee where he received the President's Award in 2012. David was recognized by the MN Department of Health's State Community Health Services Advisory Committee as a Friend of Public Health in 2010. David and spouse have managed a beef cattle and sheep operation for over 20 years, for past 14 years they produced food grade soybeans and small grains.

  • Anna Brekke

    Anna Brekke

    Scott County, Shakopee

    Anna has participated in many aspects of 4-H including livestock shows, science of agriculture, urban 4-H cultural exchange, a national conference delegate, and a state and county ambassador. She served as the youth representative on the Scott County Extension Committee while in high school. Currently Anna is a first-year student at the University of Minnesota studying sustainable systems management and applied economics and is an intern for the University’s Institute on the Environment.

  • Tammi Dahlman

    Tammi Dahlman

    Wright County, Cokato

    Tammi is the Director of Social Service/Housing, Cokato Charitable Trust, Cokato. She has been involved in many community activities ranging from 4-H to Waseca County Extension Committee work. She served on the Design Team as a stakeholder representative for the original U-Lead Advisory Academy and was also a graduate of the program. She serves as the non-staff advisor for 4-H State Ambassador Program. The Dahlman family received the Wright County Farm Family of the Year Award in 2001.

  • Wade Fauth

    Wade Fauth

    Itasca County, Grand Rapids

    Wade is the vice president of the Blandin Foundation, responsible for organizational assessment, planning, and coordination of the Foundation's leadership, policy, grants, communications, and information services activities.

    Previously, he was a manager for Land O'Lakes, Inc., agricultural cooperative, implementing economic restructuring programs in the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, and Latin America. He also served as the legislative assistant for Agriculture to U.S. Senator Thomas Daschle. He is a graduate of the American University Law School in Washington, D.C.

  • Randy Gutzmann

    Randy Gutzmann

    Washington County, Stillwater

    Graduate of CFANS with a bachelor degree in technical communications, Randy has 25 years of non-profit organization management specializing in community and regional events and economic development. He has served on numerous boards and advisory committees: Explore MN Tourism, CFANS Alumni Society Board, U of MN Tourism Center Board, and MN FFA Foundation.

  • Jacqueline King

    Jacqueline King

    Dakota County, Apple Valley

    Jacqueline King is Vice President of the community development and regional outreach departments at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Jacqueline began this appointment in September 2002 after spending several years in the community affairs department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, DC. Her prior position was as Vice President of community investment for Chase Manhattan in Baltimore, Maryland. She has served on numerous boards and has worked on community development initiatives with a variety of organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Minnesota Homeownership Center, and Rural Dynamics, Montana. Jacqueline has a master's degree in public administration from Central Michigan University.

  • Douglas Killian

    Douglas Killian

    Washington County, Lake Elmo

    Doug, a graduate of the University with a journalism major, is the senior director of International tourism for Mall of America. He had worked for 19 years in public relations for Northwest Airlines, including four years in Tokyo. Doug is active in much civic work: Tourism Center Advisory Committee, Airport Foundation MSP Board, MN Governor's Tourism Council and National Council of Attractions Board.

  • Bryon Kittelson

    Bryon Kittleson

    Martin County, Welcome

    Bryon served nearly 12 years on the Martin County Extension Committee. He also served as chair of the Martin County Extension Committee when Extension made the change to Regional offices. Bryon and his family have been honored as the 2009 Martin County Farm Family of the Year and are a part of many charities and fund raising organizations. Bryon is currently working with Extension crop specialist Liz Stahl on a crop study in Martin County.

  • Mark Koehn

    Mark Koehn

    Morrison County, Holdingford

    Mark grew up on a dairy/hog farm, worked as an independent pork producer until he became an agricultural appraiser in 1997. Mark has served on the Morrison County Extension Committee and continues to be involved in civic and community boards, including Upsala Cooperative Telephone Association, Morrison County FHA Loan committee and Holdingford Area Historical society (Founder, past President).

  • Barb Liukkonen

    Barb Liukkonen

    Lake County, Two Harbors

    Barb worked in water resources for 35 years before retiring in 2011. Her early research interests addressed the effects of acid rain and mercury deposition on Minnesota's surface waters. She served as an Extension educator for 25 years, focusing on safe drinking water, wastewater management, invasive species, arsenic and dairy, volunteer monitoring, and climate adaptation. She and her husband live in Two Harbors where she has served on the Lake County Extension Committee and volunteers at the library and Farmer's Market.

  • Randy Maluchnik

    Randy Maluchnik

    Carver County, Chaska

    Randy, serving a 3rd term on the Carver County Board of Commissioners also is on numerous committees for county development, transit and watershed initiatives. As Past President of the Association of Minnesota Counties he participated on many national level task forces for county based issues. He has a long history of advocating for veterans and their families in both state and national levels.

  • Jeane Pearson

    Ramsey County, St. Paul

    Jeane, a retired lawyer, practiced law in Fort Dodge Iowa, 1990-2002. Her career also included teaching and a banker-trust officer. Wherever she was, community involvement was important. While in Iowa, she was past president of the League of Women Voters, AAUW, and YWCA. Jeane has been involved with Minnesota community service since 2002, volunteering with the Phalen 4-H Club, 4-H camp, starting kids book clubs at city recreation centers and serves on the Ramsey County Extension Committee.

    Thom Petersen

    Pine County, Pine City

    For the past 14 years, Thom has been the Director of Government Relations for the Minnesota Farmers Union working on farm and rural issues. Prior to this position, he was a horse trainer for 14 years at FiddleHorse Farm. He is active in horse and farm-related organizations. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Farmer Legal Action and MN Ag in the Classroom. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia.

    Kathleen Roberts

    Isanti County, Isanti

    Kathleen’s career has included many leadership positions with CoBank and is currently a Vice-President responsible for delivery of CoBank’s products and services to cooperatives and Farm Credit Associations. Kathleen holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Iowa State University and has a graduate degree from the School of Banking, University of Colorado. She belongs to numerous professional associations and is a board member and volunteer at Cambridge Surplus Food Distribution that partners with Second Harvest Heartland.

    Fatima Said

    Winona County, Winona

    Fatima has a background in education and business. In 2005 she was appointed Executive Director for Project FINE, a non-profit program working with new immigrants to spread diversity throughout her region and the state of Minnesota.

  • Darlene St. Clair

    Darlene St. Clair

    Stearns County, St. Cloud

    Iyekiyapiwiƞ Darlene St. Clair is an Associate Professor at Saint Cloud State University where she teaches American Indian Studies and directs the Multicultural Resource Center. Her work focuses on several areas: Dakota Studies; Native Nations of Minnesota; the integration of Native cultures, histories and languages into curricula and educational institutions; and the arts and cultural expressions of Native peoples. She is Bdewakaƞtuƞwaƞ Dakota and a citizen of the Lower Sioux Indian Community in Minnesota.

  • Noreen Thomas

    Noreen Thomas

    Clay County, Moorhead

    Noreen has a bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition and a minor in microbiology from North Dakota State University. She has worked with NASA's imagery program and been published in NASA's magazine. Noreen and her daughter co-founded the 4-H Happy Feet program which provides suitable footwear for children in need. Noreen is currently living on an organic farm near Moorhead, Minnesota and is a past recipient of the University of Minnesota Siehl Award.

  • Laura Wyatt

    Laura Wyatt

    Anoka County, East Bethel

    Laura has been appointed as the CAC youth representative for the next two years. She has been involved in 4-H since kindergarten and her range of activities include countless county events and activities. Currently she is in her second year as a Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador. Last month she received the Minnesota 4-H key award. She has been the summer Extension assistant for Anoka County 4-H for the past two summers. Currently she is a full-time student at the University, majoring in agricultural education and minoring in leadership and works part-time for the Minnesota 4-H Foundation.

  • Don Yutrzenka

    Don Yutrzenka

    Marshall County, Argyle

    Don is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Crookston. He has been farming all of his life and was involved in 4-H during his youth. Don stays active in his community and church and has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer, NDSU's Outstanding Agriculturist Award, and the Marshall County Farm Family of the Year.

  • Marvin Zutz

    Marvin Zutz

    Minnesota Barley Council and Minnesota Turf Seed Council, Executive Director
    Red Lake County, Red Lake Falls

    Marv Zutz serves as the executive director for Minnesota Barley Council and Minnesota Turf Seed Council. He has worked extensively with Extension in research and agriculture promotion. Marv is active in grower outreach activities with the Barley Coordinated Agricultural Project (CAP), funded by the National Research Initiative (NRI) of the USDA. The project involves government and public- and private-sector laboratories and links laboratory and field research with education and outreach. It uses modern tools of genomics to facilitate classical plant breeding efforts to develop superior barley varieties.

County Extension Committee

Extension engages citizen stakeholders and county commissioners across the state. State law mandates that all 87 counties have a County Extension Committee that includes county citizens and two county commissioners.
